Frequently Asked Questions

Everything I'm asked most before, during, and after a session. If your question isn't here, just reach out.

Getting Started

Booking & Scheduling

How do I book a session?

Through cal.com/kahea-rivera. Pick your appointment time and submit the request first, then you'll land on a confirmation screen with a link to a short intake form to complete before your appointment. Heads up that cancellations and no-shows are subject to a fee, details in the Policies section below.

Where are you located?

I practice at Alana Natural Therapy, 1521 S King St, Ste 405, Honolulu, HI. Parking is free for customers and located behind the building, accessible from South King Street.

How far in advance should I book?

A few days to a week ahead gives you the most flexibility with times. If you need something sooner, check the calendar directly, openings do come up.

Can I combine more than one modality in a session?

Yes. Many sessions blend lomilomi, cupping, MPS, or scar tissue release depending on what your body needs that day. Mention it when you book, or we can decide together once we talk through what's going on.

Getting Ready

Before Your Session

What should I wear?

Whatever you're comfortable removing. You'll be draped with sheets throughout, and only the area being worked on is uncovered at any time. If you'd rather stay clothed, we can absolutely work with that too, just let me know.

This is my first lomilomi or massage. What should I expect?

We'll talk before you get on the table, what's going on in your body, what you're hoping for, anything I should know. From there the session unfolds based on what you need, it's not a fixed routine. You're always welcome to ask questions or tell me to adjust pressure at any point.

Should I eat beforehand?

A light meal is fine. I'd avoid coming in on a very full stomach or completely empty, either can make it harder to relax. Drinking water before and after your session helps too.

What health information should I share before we start?

Let me know about any injuries, surgeries, pregnancy, medical conditions, medications, or allergies (including to oils) before your session. This isn't a medical exam, it just helps me tailor the work safely to what's happening in your body that day. You'll cover most of this in the intake form below.

Do I need to fill anything out before I come in?

Yes, a short client intake and consent form. Submit your appointment request on cal.com first, then you'll land on a confirmation screen with the intake link at the bottom. It covers your health history, any areas to focus on or avoid, allergies or sensitivities, pressure preference, and your goals for the session, plus a couple of extra sections if you're booking hot stones or cupping specifically. It only takes a few minutes, and completing it before your appointment means we can spend your session on the table, not on paperwork.

Can I get a massage while pregnant?

Often, yes, with adjustments. The intake form asks about pregnancy so we can plan positioning and pressure appropriately; if you're further along or have any pregnancy-related complications, bring those details (and anything your healthcare provider has noted) into the form or mention them when you book.

Modalities

The Work

What is lomilomi?

A Native Hawaiian perspective on health and healing, not a fixed routine. It draws on flowing, rhythmic bodywork along with presence and intention, treating the whole person rather than just the sore muscle. Read more on the Lomilomi page.

How is that different from a typical spa massage?

The spa industry has popularized a version built around long strokes marketed as "mimicking ocean waves." That can still feel wonderful, but it's a narrowed piece of something much bigger, rooted in lineage and training that goes far deeper than a class or two.

What is Dolphin Neurostim / MPS?

Microcurrent point stimulation, a gentle, non-invasive tool applied externally with a handheld probe. It's often useful for scar tissue and nerve-related pain. No needles, and treatment at any one point is brief. More detail on the Dolphin Neurostim / MPS page.

Do you do cupping?

Yes. Cupping uses suction to lift and release tight tissue, and it's often brought in alongside lomilomi or therapeutic massage depending on what's needed. It can leave temporary marks or discoloration where the cups were placed, this is normal and fades on its own; the intake form will ask if any conditions make cupping unsuitable for you.

Do you offer hot stones or thermal therapy?

Yes, I bring hot stones in as one of several tools during a session, alongside lomilomi, cupping, or MPS, based on what your body calls for that day. If you're specifically requesting hot stones, there's a short section on the intake form to flag anything that might make thermal therapy unsuitable for you.

What about scar tissue release?

This is gentle, hands-on work with older or more recent scars to help the surrounding tissue move and feel less restricted. It's not aggressive, and we go at a pace that's comfortable for you.

Can these all be part of one session?

Yes, that's typical. I work primarily with oil and bring in dry work, cupping, hot stones, or MPS as it's useful, tailored to what your body's holding that day rather than a set menu.

Policies

What's your cancellation policy?

Cancellations or rescheduling with less than 24 hours' notice are subject to a late cancellation fee of 50% of the scheduled session price. No-shows are responsible for 100% of the scheduled appointment price.

What if I'm running late?

Your session will still end at the scheduled time, so late arrival means less time on the table. If you're running behind, a quick heads up is appreciated so I can plan accordingly.

What if I'm sick on the day of my appointment?

Please reschedule rather than come in, I won't be able to provide a service if you're ill. There's no fee for rescheduling due to illness, just let me know as soon as you can and we'll find another time.
